Available Horses

Below are photos of many of Turning For Home's adoptable Thoroughbreds. Potential adopters must fill out an adoption application, along with references and photos of where the horse would live. We also REQUIRE a “No Auction/Right of First Refusal Contract” to be signed by all approved adopters before taking a horse home. These documents can be downloaded fromTFH ADOPTION APPLICATION. Please email turningforhome@patha.org for further information. Check back to this page often, as we receive four new horses/week!

Turning For Home, Inc. is a non-profit 501 c organization dedicated to finding safe and loving homes for all of its retirees. Please consider carefully the costs and care involved in taking a recently retired racehorse before deciding to make the commitment.

TRAINING TIP FOR
YOUR NEW OTTB
Teaching your exracehorse how to stand for mounting
You will be better able to understand the "wiggleworm" antics of your new adoptee if you know how things are done 7 days a week at the racetrack. Each rider at the track is given a leg up, often while the horse is walking and being led by a groom. So pulling a horse up to a mounting block for the first time, or digging a toe into his side as you climb up from the ground takes some getting used to for our guys!
Patience is the key, and a good ground person in front of, or on the off-side of your horse can help to keep him quiet and still while you adjust your stirrups, or stand up on the mounting block. Many horses have no problem with being mounted this way on the very first day of their new lives, but others will require a slow, quiet hand and lots of praise.
It's ok to have the ground person stay at his head or on the leadshank while you quietly "ask" your horse to move away from the block when you are ready. Relaxed hands and loose reins are a good start, too, to show your horse that everything is "cool."
SAFE is a 4yo mare who is available for adoption
